We are the authors of The Coach Approach to School Leadership: Leading Teachers to Higher Levels of Effectiveness. We co-moderate the Twitter chat #educoach on Wednesday nights at 8pm CST and #CoachApproach on the first Thursday of each month at 8pm CST. We are passionate about leading and inspiring school leaders to be learning leaders with a coach approach mindset for the highest levels of learning.
Jessica is an Elementary School Principal and District Assessment Coordinator in Wisconsin. She is the 2014 Wisconsin Elementary School Principal of the Year. She has previously taught in Minnesota, where she earned her bachelor of arts degree at Bemidji State University. She taught and worked as an instructional coach and assistant principal in Arizona, earning her master’s degree at Arizona State University. Jessica is also an adjunct professor in the Educational Leadership Department at Viterbo University.
In addition to The Coach Approach to School Leadership (ASCD, 2017), she is also the co-author of Breaking Out of Isolation: Becoming a Connected School Leader (Corwin, 2015) and has a self-published childrens novel, Adventures in Blockworld: A Novel for the Young Minecraft Fans. A dynamic, innovative educator and author, Dr. Shira Leibowitz is the founding Director of Portfolio School, designed as a network of K-12 schools focused on innovative project based, interdisciplinary learning. Prior to joining Portfolio, Shira served as a principal and Head of School in independent schools in the greater New York City area. A recognized leader in project-based learning, educational innovation, and instructional coaching, Shira has coached teachers throughout the country in implementing project-based learning in their classrooms and has led online communities of practice for educators focused on educational innovation, teaching and learning, and instructional coaching.
Shira earned her B.A, magna cum laude with distinction in all subjects, from Cornell University and a Ph.D. in Education from the Jewish Theological Seminary of America, including extensive study at Teachers’ College of Columbia University. Shira lives with her husband, Alfredo, and is the proud mother of two children - Talia, who is studying early childhood education at Drexel University and works in the Philadelphia public schools, and Ronen who is in high school. Included in her family are her two dogs, a cockapoo named Oliver and a jack russell terrier named Max.
Kathy is an educational consultant at Northwest Area Education Agency in Iowa as well as a private consultant specializing in the areas of leadership and instructional coaching. She has a background as an elementary teacher, an instructional coach and a school improvement leader. She earned her bachelor of science degree from Iowa State University, her master’s degree from Morningside College and her PK-12 principal endorsement from the Iowa Principal Leadership Academy. Kathy is also an adjunct professor in the Education Department at Morningside College currently focusing in the area of literacy.
